Puppet show, talks to mark World Environment Day

With the slogan ‘Zero Tolerance for Illegal Wildlife Trade,’ the Department of Forests and Wildlife and the Department of Science, Technology and Environment are organising World Environment Day celebrations here on Sunday.

A puppet show by Puducherry Science Forum on protecting wildlife and different biodiversity and scheduled species are being planned. Department of Science, Technology and Environment Director M. Dwarakanath said that financial assistance would be given to non-governmental organisations involved in environment protection and education.

Research scholars from Pondicherry University, NGOs, industrialists and department heads will participate in the programme. Rajesh Chandra, Secretary to Government (Environment), will preside over the function and G. Kumar, Conservator of Forest, will deliver the keynote address. Dr. Venkataraman, former director, Zoological Survey of India, will speak on medicine biodiversity conservation.

Shanthi, inspector, Wildlife Crime Control Branch, Chennai, and P. Rajamanickam, coordinator, Eco Service, Auroville, will present papers on wildlife conservation and legal provisions for wildlife protection on the occasion.
